The Uganda Hippos will be under the guidance of former Uganda Cranes attacking midfielder Jackson Mayanja in the U-20 African Cup Nations qualifiers in the CECAFA region.

Mayanja succeeded Morley Byekwaso on an interim basis, the latter oversaw a side that won the CECAFA title in 2020 en route to AFCON where they reached the final during their first time of asking in 2021 but unfortunately, they lost 2-0 to Ghana in Mauritania.

The above portrays the kind of task ahead of Mayanja but he is optimistic that they will do a good job altogether starting with the qualifiers.

“I am sure that these players are going to put up a good performance in the qualifiers,” Mayanja told the media before adding.

“It is almost a new team and they have shown that they can bring us the results we want based on the friendlies we had against Uganda Premier League teams KCCA FC and Maroons FC.”

“All the 24 players that I have selected are good and disciplined and also have an attribute of hard work amongst them and I am confident that they will bring for us positive results,” he added.

The Hippos are pooled in Group B alongside neighbours Tanzania and Ethiopia and commerce their qualifiers against the former on Saturday before they face the latter a week later.

Group A has five teams in hosts Sudan, Burundi, South Sudan, and Djibouti. The AFCON qualification campaign will run from October 29th to November 11th, 2022 in the CECAFA region.

Further, the AFCON final tournament will commence on February 18th to March 12th, 2023 in Egypt.

The top four teams will qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup to be held in Indonesia later that year from May 20th to June 11th.

Soltilo Bright Stars FC and UPDF FC took the lion’s share of the Uganda Hippos squad for the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in the CECAFA Zone.

The two clubs have four players each in the 24-man squad that travelled to Sudan on Wednesday morning ahead of the tournament that gets underway on October 28.

Bright Stars have representatives in goalkeeper Shamulan Kamya, defender Simon Kato, midfielder Issa Bugembe, and forward Ibrahim Kasinde.

Defenders Samson Kasozi and Simon Mukisa and forwards Kyeyune Abbas and Rogers Mugisha belong to UPDF.

Isma Mugulusi, Faisal Wabyoona, and Denis Ssenyondwa are the three survivors of the team that reached the AFCON final two years ago.

Mayanja appointed Mugulusi as the team’s captain and the latter will be assisted by Titus Ssemantimba, Ibrahim Juma, and goalkeeper Abdu Magada respectively.
