FIFA U17 World Cup: Uganda qualifier against Cameroon postponed, tournament in balance

By Angu Lesley – Cameroon

The last qualifying phase of the African qualifiers for the 2021 FIFA U17 Women have been called off and will be rescheduled to a later date, Kick442 last learnt.

Uganda and Cameroon were set to meet in the play-off round qualifier on October 31 in Kampala before the return leg two-weeks later.

The Ugandan girl’s team has been in residential camp at the Cranes Paradise Hotel since Monday last week.

According to Kick442, the U17 Lionesses of Cameroon camp that was initially planned for the coming week has been also subsequently called off.

This comes after sources at the Cameroon Football Federation were informed unofficially that World’s football governing body, FIFA, is likely to postponed the last round Women’s Under-17 FIFA World Cup qualifiers for the African zone.

This online portal understands plans are well on course to reschedule the qualifiers matches and likely the tournament.

Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) is yet to make an official statement but we understand some related member associations have been informed about the move caused by the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Women’s U17 World Cup was to be held at five venues in India and was initially scheduled for November 2-21, 2021 before it was moved to February 2021.

An official statement is expected from the FIFA-Confederations working group which was recently established by the Bureau of the FIFA Council to address the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic is eagerly-awaited.

The working group includes the FIFA administration and Secretary Generals and top executives from all confederations.

It unanimously approved a series of recommendations following its first meeting, which was organised via conference this week.
While the tournament itself is five months away, just a few qualifying events have been held so far.

Nigeria’s Under 17 girls were to face Ghana, Cameroon had to face Uganda amongst other fixtures to produce Africa’s three representatives for February’s tournament in India.
