Just like other sports entities, football was also equally represented at the 2019 Nile Special USPA Awards ceremony held on Wednesday at Serena Hotel in Kampala.
The U17 Women’s football team walked away with the best team of the year Award which was received by head coach Ayub Khalifa on behalf of his girls.
Khalifa and his charges had a successful 2019 winning the U17 COSAFA and U17 CECAFA tournaments and also had captain Juliet Nalukenge finish as the Female Player of the Year in the Airtel FUFA Award.
The U17 side has continued to build on the performance since then, eliminating Tanzania 5-2 in the first-round qualifiers for the U17 Women FIFA World Cup.
They were one step away from making history by becoming the first Ugandan national football team to play at a FIFA World Cup tournament if they had progressed past Cameroon.
At the same event, Uganda Cranes and Al Ittihad Alexandria forward Emmanuel Okwi won the footballer of the year accolade which was received by FUFA Chief Executive Edgar Watson on behalf of the striker.
Okwi took to Twitter to expressing his pleasure after receiving the accolade; “Humbled for the recognition as the USPA footballer of the year 2019.”
“Congratulations to all the winners and thanks USPA, God above all, to quit is not an option,” Okwi posted on his Twitter account.
The Uganda Sports Press Association was celebrating 50-year in existence and will hold its election for a new executive on November 28th.
