Geoffrey Gagganga double for Uganda Christian University (UCU), helped the defending Champions to a 2-0 victory over Islamic University In Uganda (IUIU), as they got their Pepsi University Football League defence underway at the UCU play grounds.
UCU almost fell behind after a sluggish start, but Ramathan Musema failed to connect with the ball, as his effort fizzled just wide of the target and that’s almost all IUIU offered on the day.
Gagganga opened his account for the season after 20 minutes, his shot from just outside the area creeping into the bottom corner, handing UCU a deserved lead after a period of dominance.
The hosts kept their hunt for a second, coming close a couple of times. Francis Jurua put his effort over the bar with the goal gaping, after IUIU custodian Rashid Tezikoma was caught out by a cross after he failed to properly communicate with his defender.
The hosts came back even stronger in the second half, Jurua’s cut back caught out the IUIU defenders, but Anthony Male’s powerful effort drawing a top save from Tezikoma.
Close to the hour mark, Anthony Male set up Gagganga, but Tezikoma reacted quickly off his line to deny the goal scorer.
There was no denying Gagganga moments later, as he completed his double. IUIU did as little regards challenging the champions, as they were held back with wave after wave of their hosts.
The frustrated visitors kept chasing shadows as the clock counted down. At 2-0, the final whistle was blown giving the defending champions their first win of the 2020 Pepsi University Football League.
