UFL: Uganda Martyrs edge Bugema to earn a semifinal spot

Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) qualified for the semifinals of the 2022 Pepsi University League after defeating Bugema University 2-1 in the return leg played on Tuesday in Nkozi.

It was Sunny Kaija and Joseph Kayondo who scored for the hosts, while Swalifidin Ssebaale pulled one back for the visitors, to ensure the tie ends 3-2 on aggregate in favour of the UMU.

The visitors started the fight on a high note after Moses Elakas glided forward to find Innocent Musuk, but the forward’s effort went wide.

UMU’s first realistic chance came through the fast-paced Masudi Kafumbe, who placed a through pass to meet Raymond Othieno but, Bugema’s Donald Wafula cleared his lines.

In the 36th minute, Kaija broke the deadlock to send the home fans in a frenzy.

Eleven minutes later, Kaija nearly extended their lead after meeting a loose ball at the edge of the box, but it narrowly sailed over the bar.

With fifteen minutes left on the clock, Ssebaale levelled matters to bring the Luwero-based institution into the game equation.

But, in the 89th minute, Kayondo found the back of the net through a venomous freekick, getting UMU back into the lead.Uganda Martyrs join St. Lawrence in the semifinals to book the second slot.

In the other qurterfinals, UCU will host Nkumba on Thursday, the first meeting ended goalless in Entebbe.

MUBS will host neighbours Kyambogo next week on Tuesday, game is tied 2-1 on aggregate in favour of MUBS.
