The national U17 side Uganda Cubs are set to play at the Turkish Invitational Tournament from March 1st – 10th, in Turkey Antalya as preparations for the 2019 Total Africa U17 Cup of Nations.
The development was confirmed to www.football-256.com by the FUFA Youth Development manager Bashir Mutyaba who has already embraced the idea ahead of the April 14th – 28th U17 finals in Tanzania.
“It will be good for the boys and all of us,” Mutyaba said, before adding. “It will give the boys a chance to play against different teams that play different styles of football too ahead of the tournament in Tanzania.”
The team currently handled by KCCA FC’s junior team head coach Jackson Magera and Hamza Lutalo has held training session in preparations for the two trips.
The first initial part of the preparations ended with a 2-0 defeat to Burundi’s U20 side that is also gearing up for the 2019 Total Africa U20 Cup of Nations in Niger in February.
“The camp and trip to Burundi was one of the ways to prepare the team for the challenge ahead and we have program in place to continue with the preparations,” Mutyaba said.
“We are mainly going to use the juniors’ league that returns on February 3rd, finish the second round games and play some of the third games before the team travels to Turkey,” he added.
The invitation to Turkey is not for the Cubs alone but all the other seven teams that qualified for the finals in Tanzania, these include the hosts, Morocco, Senegal, Guinea, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Angola.
The top four teams from the tournament will also qualify for the 2019 U17 FIFA World Cup in Peru, it will happen between October 5th – 27th in five different cities of Lima, Iquitos, Piura, Tacna, Moquegua and Arequipa
