Rivals KCCA FC and Express FC will renew their rivalry when they meet in the quarterfinals of the 2021 Stanbic Uganda Cup.
The Red Eagles host the first leg of the mouth watering clash at the Betway Muteesa II Stadium on Wednesday.
The two are the most successful clubs in the history of the Uganda Cup with either side winning the crown 10 times, SC Villa comes close on nine titles.
KCCA and Express will be meeting for the first time in the Uganda Cup since 2018 when the Kasasiro Boys beat the Red Eagles in the semifinals before winning their eighth cup against Paidha Black Angels.
Despite being joint-winners, Express’ last triumph was 14 years ago when they won it in 2007, beating KCCA 4-2 on penalties in the final.
En route to the quarterfinals, Morley Byekwaso’s side eliminated Big League side Maroons FC 5-0 on aggregate while Express were 2-1 aggregate winners over fellow Premier League side URA FC at the Round of 16.
Ahead of the Wankulukuku encounter, the Red Eagles look geared for a domestic double, they are also seated top of the 16-team Uganda Premier League table.
While for the Kasasiro Boys, the Uganda Cup provides the only avenue to silverware this season having experienced a poor campaign in the league where they are seated fourth.
Both sides settled for a draw in their previous league meeting at Lugogo with Eric Kambale on target for Express while Charles Lwanga scored for KCCA in the 1-1 draw this season.
Kambale and Lwanga will be the players to watch from either side, the former is in fine scoring form on 16 goals in all competitions while the latter has managed 11.
Going into Wednesday’s game, Wasswa Bbosa’s charges have won all their last seven matches in the league with a 4-0 thrashing of Kitara their latest. KCCA has been on and off but won their last league game 3-1 against Busoga United on Sunday.
