With qualification for the U20 Africa Cup of Nations now sealed, the Uganda U20 will now try and achieve the holy grail by emerging winners of the 2020 CECAFA U20 Championship.

The Uganda Hippos progressed to the tournament’s finals after a comfortable 3-1 victory over Kenya in the first semi-final at the Black Rhino Academy grounds on Monday afternoon.

Morley Byekwaso’s boys will play hosts Tanzania in the final, and according to striker Ivan Bogere, securing AFCON qualification is just half of the story.

“I want to first thank God for enabling us to win the semi-final and qualify for AFCON,” Bogere said after the game before adding.

“Thanks also to my fellow teammates for the joint effort and also the coaches for their support.”

“The AFCON feat is achieved, it’s not yet done we still have a trophy to play for in the final, let’s add icing on the cake come Wednesday,” Bogere noted..

Bogere scored a goal either side of the half time break, first running onto Najib Yiga’s through ball midway through the first half before converting a penalty in the 63rd minute to add to Kenneth Ssemakula’s strike that got the Hippos going.

The Proline FC striker has managed four goals and he is the tournament’s top scorer having scored another brace when Uganda thrashed Burundi 6-1 in their final group game five days ago.

Uganda Hippos face Tanzania in the CECAFA U-20 Championship final to be played on Wednesday, December 2.

The two finalists will represent the CECAFA region at the U-20 youth AFCON slated for February and March 2021 in Mauritania.

Morley Byekwaso’s side have qualified for the AFCON tournament for their first time in history.
