Umar Kasumba’s efforts geared towards a Cranes call up

By Peter Tabu

Sofapaka FC and Ugandan striker Umar Kasumba is a very happy man, at least for now. The former SC Villa frontman was named the SportPesa / LG February player of the month in the Kenyan Premier League on Wednesday morning.

Kasumba notched four goals in three games for Sofapaka in the process helping Batoto ba Mungu register three wins and a draw, its such performances that will get him a Cranes call up.

“It is every person’s dream to play for their country and I’m hoping that with the hard work I’m putting in one day my time will come,” Kasumba was quoted by the Kenyan media.

“I cannot fault them for overlooking me now because I just have to work hard until l impress them,” Kasumba added.

Kasumba opened his February account with a goal in Batoto Ba Mungu’s 2-0 win over Kariobangi Sharks, before netting Sofapaka’s opener as they came from behind to snatch a point against Kakamega Homeboyz at Bukhungu Stadium.

He wrapped up the month with a brace in an emphatic 4-1 win over the league leaders Mathare United at Kasarani to take his season tally to seven, behind Kakamega Boyz’ Allan Wanga who is on nine.

The lanky forward also expressed his target of winning the top scorer’s gong at the end of the season.

“I’m very pleased to win this award because it is my first ever. It presents a challenge to me for I have to keep performing.”

There cannot be room for complacency since I want to win the golden boot this year,” added the jubilant Ugandan

Kasumba beat Bandari’s Congolese striker Yema Mwana and Gor Mahia’s Nicholas Kipkirui to scoop the gong garnering a total of 19 points.
