Following their narrow 3-2 victory over Wakiso Giants FC in the Uganda Premier League, KCCA FC head coach Morley Byekwaso had new signings Saidi Mayanja and Haruna Lukwago for showers of praise.

The Kasasiro Boys needed a brace from Ashraf Mugume and another from Godfrey Wasswa to win at the MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo on Saturday.

However, Mayanja caught the eye, was immense in the win, hit the woodwork, was a constant threat and he as well set up Mugume’s game-winning strike from the corner.

“Mayanja has been outstanding today and we knew this as we recruited him,” said Byekwaso to the media after the match.

“He is a really talented boy, eager to learn and I can assure you, he is actually yet to reach his full potential,” the joyous tactician added.

Lukwago, a left-back brought in for the injured Herbert Achai, was solid in defence, balancing the line with attack.

“We monitored Lukwago from his days at Mbale Heroes, and we know about his qualities,” noted Byekwaso.

“He didn’t start the match to his full strengths, but it’s just the first game of the season, and he will even be better.”

Despite the win, Byekwaso wasn’t entirely convinced with the performance on the evening.

“We struggled against a strong team, that has willing runners and a clear way of playing football.”

“But, it’s just the start of the season, my players are not yet fully match-fit and I’m optimistic they will get even better,” he added.

“When everyone is fully fit, we want to play with an identity and pick results as well. We want to play well and not just win.”

KCCA hopes to win their first league title in four years, and will continue the quest when they visit Arua Hill SC on October 7.
