KCCA FC last won the Uganda Premier League in 2019 and are desperate to end their three-year drought.
With the first round of the 2022/23 season in the final bend, the Kasasiro Boys find themselves positioned top of the 15-team UPL table standings with 29 points, and head coach Morley Byekwaso is optimistic that this could be their year.
“Winning trophies is the main objective of this great club but we have not managed any in the last couple of years,” Byekwaso said after KCCA’s 2-1 win over Busoga United at Lugogo on Friday.
“Last season was humiliating even though we finished second we were many points behind the champions Vipers.”
“So this season we are aiming at winning the league and by the look of things, I believe this could be our year.”
“I know it is still early in the season and the race is tight up there with teams close to each other in the top positions but we shall continue improving in several aspects but with winning the title on top of our minds.”
Julius Poloto and Tshisungu Kankonde were the players on target for KCCA – the former scored from a penalty in the 19th minute while the latter’s goal came in the 78th minute after Laban Tibiita had equalized for the visitors in the 34th minute.
Byekwaso is taking charge of his second full season and he has been under constant pressure with many calling for his head but he has recently shut down criticism with the team registering positive results.
“I know how this team runs from how were are supposed to play and very many other things but at times games do not come that easy.”
“Some games are difficult and the game against Busoga is a perfect example of what I am talking about they are in the relegation zone, yes but they are also fighting for survival.”
“Such teams are challenging and I know whoever has not played against them will testify to this but at the end of the day, we got the most important thing which is the three points, the other things we can always improve them.”
The 13-time UPL champions will visit Bright Stars FC on Tuesday, December 20th, 2022 looking to wind up the first round with a positive result as they continue chasing winning the crown.
