The fixtures for the 2022/23 Uganda Premier League season were released on Thursday night and how the meeting between KCCA FC and Wakiso Giants FC has become common at beginning of the campaign is eye-catching.
It will be the second straight season that the Kasasiro Boys and the Purple Sharks tussle it out in the first game of the season.
The two faced off at the start of the 2021/22 season and KCCA defeated Wakiso 3-0 in the latter’s backyard.
Furthermore, it will be Wakiso’s fourth season in Uganda’s top-tier division and they will be playing KCCA at the start of the season for the third time.
Wakiso’s maiden season in the UPL was 2019/20 and their first outing was at Lugogo, a game KCCA won 1-0 courtesy of Allan Okello.
It is only in the 2020/21 season that they did not play against KCCA at the beginning of the campaign. Then, Wakiso started against Police FC and they drew 0-0 while KCCA edged Soltilo Bright Stars FC 2-1.
On the other hand, holders Vipers SC will start their title defence with a home tie against Bright Stars.
Newly promoted sides Black Power FC and Maroons FC will host BUL FC and Busoga United FC respectively on match day one.
Record holders SC Villa will be at home against Modern Gaddafi FC, seven-time champions Express will visit UPDF FC and URA FC will host Onduparaka FC.
Only 15 teams have appeared on the 2022/2023 fixture following Kyetume FC’s demotion to the Regional League for failure to fulfill the Club Licensing requirements.
The 2022/23 UPL season will commence on Friday, September 30, 2022, and climax on Saturday, May 27, 2023.
