Eric Kambale once again proved the difference as Express FC edged UPDF FC 1-0 at the Betway Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku, in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League on Saturday.

Coming into this game, UPDF and Bright Stars were the only two sides to defeat Express this season, and the former proved a hard nut with goalkeeper Yusuf Wasswa brilliant on the day despite the loss.

The game had a slow start, with the hosts having the first sniff at goal, but Wasswa denied Godfrey Lwesibawa at the far post.

Despite the Army side also growing in the game, threatening for an opener, they were dealt with a blow when striker Brian Kalumba was forced off injured and was replaced by Alex Kitata in the 15th minute.

They were shortly after punished for recklessness defending when defender Bernard Muwanga fouled Lwesibawa in the penalty area.

In-form Kambale did no mistake converting from 12 yards to give the Red Eagles a 21st minutes lead. That was his 12th league goal.

Wasswa Bbosa’s charges were determined to extend their lead before the halftime whistle but all in vain as it ended 1-0 at the interval.

Express returned from the break with the same spirit pressing their visitors against the wall but were resilient enough throughout the second stanza, and it is Kambale’s solo goal that handed the host all three points.

The forward is proving to be unstoppable. Kambale has scored in four straight league games – seven goals in total.

Express maintains third-place on 52 points with a close eye on the front runners URA FC and Vipers SC, who also won on the day.

URA continue as log leaders on 54 points while Vipers are second on 53 points with six games left to play until the end of the season.

The six-time SUPL champions will visit relegation-threatened side Busoga United on Tuesday, May 18, while UPDF, who remained seventh on 33 points, will host KCCA FC on Wednesday.
