UPL: Kimomeko salutes relentless Busoga

By Brian Aheebwa

Busoga United registered their first win in the Eastern derby when they swept aside arch rivals BUL FC 3-0 at the FUFA Technical Center in Njeru, yesterday.

It was a dull and cagey affair in the opening 45 minutes, as either sides presented little going forward with either teams committing few numbers upfront.

BUL FC dominated possession in the midfield, but its Busoga who threatened more when they eventually made it forward. Joel Madondo and James Otim came close in the first half for Busoga.

With a little under 20 minutes to play, the gates finally opened for the visitors. Second half substitute Boban Zirintusa opened the scoring on 72 minutes from the spot.

Joel Madondo seemed to have sealed maximum points for Busoga with eight minutes to play through his well taken volley, but youngster Lawrence Tezikya added a third deep into stoppage time to confirm all three points.

Busoga had never won against their rivals previously. Five out of their last six games had ended in stalemates with BUL picking up the only victory in the fixture.

Busoga head coach Abbey Kikomeko couldn’t hide his joy at the final whistle, narrating how extremely happy with the attitude shown by his players on the day.

“Am happy that we’ve won our second game of the season, but more importantly, it has been against our rivals BUL. And to win a derby with a near perfect performance gives me more satisfaction”. Kimomeko said after the game.

“We won the game from the midfield, the supply from midfield was superb and timely. And it helped our forwards utilize their biggest strength which is pace to hurt them,” He added.

“Our players are improving day and night and they are getting the partnership because majority of them have just joined us but they are copying up very fast,”

“We now have the squad depth, and most of our players are working really hard to see that they fit in the starting lineup. This will surely improve us as a team because the competition is really high,” he added.

After match day four, Busoga find themselves in third position of the 16-team log with six points despite losing their opening two fixtures with their next game coming against West Nile based side Onduparaka FC.

Their rivals BUL are sixth, and they’ll travel to Kyabaggu sports stadium to take on table leaders Wakiso Giants.
