Youngster Hassan Mubiru started his first game for Express FC as the Red Eagles drew 1-1 with Maroons FC in the Uganda Premier League at Luzira Prisons Grounds on Friday.

Mubiru, who has been used as a second-half substitute on several occasions this season, started in the absence of Joseph Akandwanaho due to illness and went on to play and excel till full-time.

In the aftermath of the game, head coach James Odoch commended the Express Junior Team graduate’s performance on the day.

“I am impressed with the way Mubiru played today, it was his first start but he was so brave throughout the game,” Odoch told the media before adding.

“He is young but hard-working and he has shown this in training and whenever he comes on as a substitute.”

“Him being an academy graduate we did not want to rush him that is why he has been coming in as a substitute to try and get the feel of top-flight games.”

“And I think the timing was right for him to start playing and as well finish the 90 minutes.”

“I believe that we have a very talented and committed player in him and he is going to help us a lot as a team,” he noted.

Mubiru had a good display interchanging the left and right-wing positions with Allan Kayiwa and was involved in the goal Mayanja scored in the 90th minute although it was canceled out by Fred Amaku in the 95th minute.

“I am happy having started my first game for the Express senior team and played 90 minutes,” Mubiru said after the game.

“It hurts that we have not won the game having been the best team on the day, I think we lost a bit of concentration in the final minutes, and that is how we conceded but we shall continue improving.”

Express have now gone six games without a win having lost four and drawn twice and Odoch was disappointed that they could not return to winning ways against Maroons.

“It has been a disappointing afternoon having failed to hold on to the lead in the last minute. We thought we had collected all three points but ended up with one,” a devastated Odoch said.

“But generally, I am impressed with the quality of our display because my players are working as a unit we just need to continue polishing where we are not doing things right especially in the final third.”

The seven-time UPL champions now occupy the ninth position with 16 points which is a point ahead of the Prison Warders who are in 10th place with 15 points after the same number of games.

Express’ next game will be against newbies Blacks Power FC at Muteesa II, Stadium, Wankulukuku on Wednesday, December 21st, 2022 whereas Maroons will be a way to BUL FC at FUFA Technical Center, Njeru on the same day.
