UPL: Police pick up first point of the season with draw against Mbarara City

By Shafic Kiyaga

Police FC picked up their first point of the 2019/2020 Star Times Uganda Premier league after a goalless draw against Mbarara City at the Mandela national stadium, Namboole.

The Cops headed into the game with negative points after they were docked points for failing to honour their fixture against Onduparaka and then losing to BUL FC last week.

Mbarara could have gone ahead in the first minute as striker Brian Ahebwa was put through on goal, lobbing goalkeeper Hillary Jomi but Tony Kiwalaze as quick to clear the ball off the line.

With five minutes on the clock, Mubaraka Nsubuga could have played Ben Ocen through on goal, but his selfish shot flew well off target.

Mbarara kept up the pressure but the Cops had the better chances inside the opening quarter. Timothy Eyamo’s cross found Samson Kigozi unmarked at the far post, but the latter could not guide his header on target. Moments later, Yusuf Ssozi also saw his header miss the target by a whisker.

As the game wore on, Police grew in stature with Kigozi running the show with confidence and style in the midfield, as Police turned on their trade mark short and intensive passing play.

Kigozi was etched in the host’s attacking play and his clever back heel put Nsubuga through on goal. The latter’s shot was handled by Hillary Mukundane, but the referee waved off claims for a penalty.

In the second stanza, it was more of the same. Police possession but this round, Mbarara created the more potent goal scoring chances.

Paul Mucureezi found himself found himself inside the area but couldn’t direct his shot on target. Minutes later, he rounded the keeper but for the second time, the Cops cleared off the line.

Police had themselves to blame, after they failed to capitalise on the numerous counter attacking chances they got. A good pass, the correct decision or brilliant control was all that mattered for them to find that breakthrough goal.

Johnson Odong and Ruben Kimera were brought on as Police searched for a goal, but the Ankole lions defended with more resolute.

In the end, nothing could separate the two sides as they settled for a draw. Mbarara City move to seventh on the log with four points while Police remain at the foot of the table with -2 points.
