Uganda Premier League champions, Vipers SC will be keen on sending a clear statement of intent, in the first game of the 2022/23 campaign.
The Venoms play hosts to Soltilo Bright Stars FC on Friday at the St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, with the former’s full focus on defending their title.
“Now, we have to turn our focus to the league,” said Vipers head coach Roberto Oliveira, moments after the CAF Champions League Preliminary 1-0 win over Olympic Real De Bangui, two weeks back.
The Brazilian tactician was clear his side has to compete on all fronts, and the match against Bright Stars provides the perfect start.
“We have to prepare for the Uganda Premier League in our first game against Bright Stars on September 30.”
“That’s what we are now thinking about because as a big club, Vipers has to compete in all the competitions; the Uganda Cup, Premier League, and Champions League,” the buoyant Oliveira rumbled.
The Kitende side will also want to extend their blistering form that cuts back to the latter part of last season.
They have suffered just one loss in the last 20 League appearances, a 1-0 defeat to Arua Hill on January 04th, 2022.
Vipers are also looking to push further their supremacy in this fixture, having won 10 of the last 17 meetings with the Mwererwe outfit, with the other seven ending in stalemates.
Last season, the Venoms won both matches in the League. They edged Bright Stars 1-0 at Kavumba, courtesy of Yunus Sentamu, while they beat them 2-1 at Kitende.
In the latter match, Halid Lwaliwa and Cesar Manzoki, who have both moved on to North Macedonia and China respectively, were on target for Friday’s hosts.
Ibrahim Kasinde, from the spot, netted the guests’ consolation early in the second half.
As of Thursday, Oliveira had a full squad at his disposal, and it awaits to be seen if Abdu Lumala will finally get his home debut.
