Ugandan football will be revisiting and reminiscing its fond memories as two local powerhouses, SC Villa and Express FC will be facing off in the Kampala Derby on Friday, at the Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku.

Unlike in the past when the nemesis never crossed paths, the battle over who owns Kampala, and ultimately the nation, will be played at the same grounds for their two Uganda Premier League meetings.

Its importance can be traced many years back as both possess a rich history. They share 23 league trophies between themselves in its 54 years of existence, with Villa on 16, compared to Express’ seven.

“This is a hugely important game because of the weight it carries in the history of Ugandan football,” said Villa’s head coach Jackson Magera to the media, who will play hosts on Friday.

“We have prepared for this game going by the said importance and we strongly believe we’ll be able to get something positive out of it,” the optimistic Magera added.

Magera’s equal in the red corner, James Odoch, in a rather calmer assertion reiterated the importance of the match to local football’s history.

“I am aware Express against Villa is one of the biggest games in Uganda and the players will be hungrier than before to get the points.”

“Most of my players will play this derby for the first time so, the hunger will be there, I know they will play very well to get the three points,” the buoyant Odoch added.

Ironically, the fierce rivals share a home now, however, it’s clear as the two don’t share a bed, with each side plotting to down the other, in what already promises mouthwatering action.

“I know they (Villa) will be the hosts tomorrow but, this is our home and we will play as a home team,” Red Eagles’ Odoch noted.

On the current table, the two are only separated by goal difference, as they occupy third and fourth for Villa and Express respectively, with four points apiece. Tomorrow’s winner will stretch a step ahead on the log.

Each has picked a victory, a draw and without a single loss in the two games played thus far, and they will be keen on extending their relatively good start to the campaign.

“Yes, we haven’t yet lost a game we can only strengthen in many aspects, with or without the ball, our defensive setup, and in attack,” the assertive Magera said.

Meanwhile, despite Express being the last of the two to win the League (2020/21), it’s the Jogoo that have held the bigger dominion in this fixture for the past 20 meetings, dating back to 2012.

Villa have been superior on nine occasions, compared to “Mukwano Gwabangi’s” six. The other five encounters have ended in stalemates.

Last season, the first meeting ended in a barren draw while Express edged their corrival 2-1. Amir Kakomo’s own goal and another from Eric Kambale induced the win, as Isaac Ogwang managed the consolation.
