Defending champions, Vipers SC kicked off their 2022/23 Uganda Premier League campaign with an undesirable barren draw to Soltilo Bright Stars FC, at the St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende on Friday.
Much as the Venoms’ plans on the day did not come to fruition, their head coach Roberto Oliveira alias Robertinho was particularly pleased with new signing, Abdu Lumala’s brilliant display.
“I am very happy for Abdu’s (Lumala) performance as he has worked for this for a long time,” the Brazilian began in his post-match interview with the press.
The pacy winger was impressive on the evening, creating several great scoring opportunities and constantly threatened Bright Stars’ backline throughout the 90.
“He has been waiting for this opportunity and today, he showed his capacity and, he will even be better in the future,” added the tactician.
“He is a key player for me. Unfortunately, we couldn’t win but it’s just the first game and this is football.”
Meanwhile, the hosts missed several chances that could have changed the result but, Robertinho is not worried about moving forward.
“We dominated but my opponent put up an organized defensive wall. We had some chances to score, but it didn’t happen and again, that’s football.”
The Venoms won’t be in action again until Sunday, October 9 in the CAF Champions League as they host former continental champions, TP Mazembe.
On the other hand, Bright Stars will be back in action on October 4 against Maroons FC at the Kavumba Recreational Stadium.
