URA FC missed an opportunity to gain an absolute advantage at the top of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League table after playing to a goalless draw against SC Villa.

Sam Ssimbwa’s men had an opportunity to go two points clear of Vipers SC but were toothless in front of goal at the Bombo Barracks Grounds as Edward Kaziba’s men held on for a credible draw.

The Tax Collectors won the reverse fixture 2-1 but there was little prospect of a repeat as the hosts held on to the end in the barren stalemate.

The Jogoo were extremely lucky to finish the game with 11 men on the field with Geofrey Wasswa, Emmanuel Wasswa and particularly Saidi Keni – who angrily kicked out at Farouk Katongole prompting some pushing and shoving – escaping red cards.

It was evenly balanced in the first half but the visitors had the biggest opportunity inside 15 minutes but Cromwell Rwothomio’s shot came off the cross bar.

Micheal Birungi and Brian Majweega also drew top saves from Saidi Keni in the first half.

Defender Gavin Kizito came close for SC Villa from Derrick Ndahiro’s corner while Muhamad Ssenoga’s low drive drew a fine stop from Alionzi Nafian.

With URA aware that a win could take them top of the league standings, had a real go at it in the second half and had the better chances but were unable to curve out the advantage.

The visitors offered a threat late on, Birungi’s cross sailing inches wide of the target while Shafik Kagimu’s volley was brilliantly saved by Keni.

The draw sees URA pull level with Vipers on 43 points but they remain second on goal difference. SC Villa reclaim sixth position from Bright Stars on 30 points.

URA visit Bright Stars at Kavumba on Wednesday while SC Villa make the long trip to Kakyeka Stadium for a visit to Mbarara City FC.
