With the election fast approaching, the VEC has tended in a response to presidential candidate Dennis Mbidde Ssebugwawo’s formal complaints and proposals about the electoral process.

Mbidde had on August 17, 2021, in the candidates’ briefing with the committee highlighted several issues with proposals prompting a VEC meeting for a way forward.

In an August 19, 2021, letter signed by Robert Kiggundu to Mbidde, detailed responses were given to the respective proposals.

The candidate expressed dissatisfaction with CEO Shawn Mubiru’s VEC membership vis-a-vis his involvement in the registration and voting process.

In response, VEC said: “VEC will consider removing or asking the member to recuse himself from this process if the camp dissatisfied with his membership can put their complaint in writing with supporting evidence.”

The Senior Corporate Salesman also inquired on whether time lost during the hours the registration link was down would be compensated or allow manual improvisation.

The committee denied the request; “there will be no extension to the registration deadline due to the amount of work needed to cross-check and confirm details of the voters.”

“Can the committee consider outsourcing the voting process and especially voting day management to an independent entity?” inquired Mbidde.

In response, VEC confidently reversed with assured readiness to handle the process without external assistance.

“VEC believes that it can handle the voting process without outside help, and the preparations in place shall continue.”

In addition, he also encouraged the committee to consider educating the registered members to create awareness about the available voting methods.

“VEC will intensify voter awareness especially about the voting methods through the SC Villa digital channels and flyers,” the committee agreed.

Mbidde also proposed a need to cater for voters who can not make it to Villa Park on election day and those that have difficulty using electronic methods.

“VEC has considered this request and given it the due consideration it deserves. The decision is that voting on this occasion will be either in presence at Villa Park or online as earlier advised,” stated the committee.

“This proposal shall be considered for a future election,” it added.
“Is it possible to close campaigning a bit earlier so that members can cool down before entering the voting booths,” the candidate asked.

In agreement, the committee assured no voting would take place beyond August 25, 2021; “VEC accepts this proposal and is therefore directing that all campaigns shall stop on August 25, 2021, at 23:59 hrs (EAT).”

“No candidate shall publish or post new voice notes or new messages after this deadline,” it added.

The August 28, 2021 election has Mbidde up against Busiro County legislator Medard Lubega Ssegona. It is hugely contested and gathering heat every moment that passes.
