Champions Vipers SC could lose top spot to URA SC after faltering in their encounter against Wakiso Giants on Tuesday afternoon in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League.
The Wakiso outfits played out a boring goalless stalemate at the St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende in a fixture the home team has struggled to mastermind over the past two years.
The Venoms produced a sluggish first half performance, moving the ball at a snail’s pace, lacking in creativity and thereby frustrated as the game wore on.
Abdulkarim Watambala had Vipers’ best chance of the half, aiming for goal from over 40-yards as he tried to lob over goalkeeper Derrick Emukule who had strayed from his goal line, but the effort sailed inches wide.
The second half started in an almost similar style, with Vipers failing to move the ball with precision as the visitors grew more in confidence.
Ceasar Manzoki, substitutes Milton Kariisa and Paul Mucureezi wasted the home team’s best chances with the latter missing a sitter in the 82nd minute on an evening to forget.
The stalemate leaves Fred Kajoba’s side at the summit on 43 points. However, three points to URA SC who visit SC Villa on Wednesday will see them leapfrog the defending champions to the top of the league.
The draw worked to the Purple Sharks’ advantage as they moved to 12th on the 16-team log on 20 points.
Vipers will welcome third placed Express FC on Friday April 23rd in another home fixture.
Wakiso Giants will hope to further ensure safety and perhaps fight for top half positions with a trip to Kyetume FC at the Nakisunga Ground on Friday.
