Vipers midfielder Byaruhanga voted Young Player of the Season

By Shafic Kiyaga

Vipers SC midfielder Bobosi Byaruhanga has been named the Best of the Season Young Player of the Season for the 2020/21 campaign.

Byaruhanga, also named on the team of the season, was instrumental for Vipers as they sought their fifth title before eventually losing out to champions Express by two points.

The inaugural edition of the awards that recognise the best performers in the season was announced on Friday, and Byaruhanga received the award following a vote by a panel of Football256 writers.

The 19-year-old Uganda Cranes midfielder beat KCCA FC duo Charles Lwanga, Steven Sserwadda, Busoga United midfielder Isma Mugulusi and Wakiso Giants’ Frank Ssebuufu for the award.

To be eligible for the award, players had to be aged 20 or under at the start of the 2020/21 season.

“It is a special recognition to receive this award,” Byaruhanga told Football256, adding; “Winning such a recognition gives you motivation to kick on and continue being the best you can be.”

“Of course, there is a bit pressure with being named the best because you have to maintain that level, but I have a platform now, I want to perform better for Vipers and also the national team.”

The holding midfielder has developed into one of Vipers’ most important players since breaking through two years ago, playing over 30 games in all competitions, scoring five goals and assisting five times.

Byaruhanga has produced a series of eye-catching performances and crucial moments, including man of the match performances against MYDA FC in April and Bright Stars in May.

Byaruhanga’s performances have also earned him call ups to the Uganda Cranes. He was named part of the Uganda squad that played at the CHAN finals in Cameroon in January, making his senior debut in the friendly against South Africa in June.

“Byaruhanga is the greatest example of how a young player can combine dedication, hard work and talent to reach the top level,” Byaruhanga’s former youth coach Edward Golola said of the midfielder.

“He first caught my eye while at Standard High Zzana while in senior two, but when he arrived at Vipers with the youth side, people had reservations about his ability.”

“But I saw a boy determined to work his way to the very top because he carried a different work ethic from the group, let alone having the talent to be the best,” he added.

“At Vipers, we had an immensely talented group, but the way Byaruhanga carried himself and the desire he had to learn and improve every day was special, and I am sure those attributes have helped him get to where he is.”

“Credit should go to the youth coaches at Vipers like Richard Wasswa and Ronald Ssali and those at the national team who have played a role in helping the boy get to where he is,” Golola said.

“For me, he has the attributes of Fabregas. His passing range, set-piece delivery and general understanding of the game are incredible. Every young player who wants to reach the top should take lessons from him.”

“Vipers and Uganda have a special player. I am delighted for him. He deserves to be recognised, and I am sure he has a long career in football,” Golola continued.

Elsewhere, KCCA FC’s incredible work on social media through their engagements and presence on all social media outlets were recognised as the ‘most vibrant club on social media’, while the club’s media team received recognition for the club media team of the year.

Following a season where the league trophy returned to Wankulukuku, Express FC fans were recognised for spurring their team on even amidst the strict lockdown measures due to COVID-19.
