Second half substitute Paul Mucureezi scored a brace as Vipers blitzed 5-3 past Busoga United at the FUFA Technical Center on Sunday afternoon.

The champions were dominant over their rather resilient hosts as Geoffrey Wasswa, AbdulKarim Watambala and Milton Kariisa made strong returns after recovering from COVID-19.

The trio was part of five changes made by head coach Fred Kajoba including captain Halid Lwaliwa who also returned after recovering from the coronavirus.

David Bagoole was also handed a start against his former side together with Dan Sserunkuuma who was handed his first start of the season.

Vipers started strong, Muhamad Shaban drawing a brilliant save from Ali Kimera in the 10th minute after beating Shafiq Kakeeto onto a long ball, but his shot kept out by Kimera’s strong left hand.

The Venoms took the lead in the 18th minute, Wasswa’s free kick from 25 yards out deflected past Kimera.

Busoga hit back almost instantly in the 25th minute, George Kasonko on hand to power in the rebound after Fabien Mutombora had done well to keep out Ismail Mugulusi’s initial shot.

In the 28th minute, Kariisa restored Vipers’ lead capitalising on poor defending to loop over Kimera as the game picked up pace and intensity.

Five minutes into the second half, Watambala extended Vipers’ lead with a left footbed volley from outside the box after good link up play with Shaban set up the midfielder.

Mugulusi who was a handful for Vipers pulled a goal back for his side with a brilliant effort after beating wriggling past Bagoole.

Mucureezi who had come on for Bagoole at the hour mark, turned in a brilliant free kick from 20 yards, before he was at the end of an excellent move that involved two other substitutes Disan Galiwango and Najib Yiga.

Paul Ssekulima scored Busoga’s third goal in the 88th minute after a fast counter attack, beating Aziz Kayondo to the ball at the far post to tap in past Mutombora.

Vipers who started the day in 12th rise up to seventh on the log with seven points, four points behind leaders URA albeit with two games in hand.

Busoga meanwhile is still winless after five games of the season and fall into 15th, with a single point, as they continue to suffer their poor start to the season since they gained promotion to the top flight in 2016.
