Vipers sloppy again as they suffer defeat to Express

By Allan Damba

Champions Vipers SC showcased a below par performance in their first loss at the St. Mary’s Stadium this season against title rivals Express Fc on Friday in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League.

The home side started sluggishly with the visitors having the better chances to take the lead earlier on, Godfrey Lwesibawa coming close to breaking the deadlock.

The rest of the half had little to offer in terms of clear-cut chances from either team save for Abdulkarim Watambala’s brilliance. The youngster had a shot deflect off the cross bar and also fizzled a low drive inches wide of the target.

The second half returned more tactical with both sides extremely calculative with their moves in search for the first of the day.

In the 65th minute, however, John Byamukama’s screamer from 18-yards sailed beyond Bashir Ssekagya’s stretch to draw wild celebrations from the visitors’ dugout.

Fred Kajoba and his boys were dented a huge blow to their title defence. Joint leaders URA SC now have a chance to go three points clear at the top of the table.

The two are locked on 43 points but URA will claim the apex if they pick maximum points away at the Solitilo Bright Stars on Saturday, April 24.

The loss should pile more pressure to head coach Fred Kajoba who has now failed to master a home victory in two consecutive games.

Meanwhile, the Red Eagles’ title hopes have been reignited. Even though they stay in third position, they are now three points adrift the leaders.

Vipers will hope to re-trace their brilliance when they visit strugglers MYDA FC next Tuesday. Express host Onduparaka on Wednesday.
