Vipers tighten grip on second place

By Clive Kyazze

Striker Tito Okello scored Vipers all important goal in their 1-0 over Kirinya Jinja SSS five minutes to the break to give the league holders three points in their quest to defend the StarTimes Uganda Premier League.

The odds were already in Vipers’ favor, Kirinya started life without experience coach Charles Ayiekoh who resigned to concentrate on a coaching course but also the Jinja side hadn’t defeated the three time champions at Kitende in the last two meetings.

Vipers continued with Geoffrey Wasswa at left back while Halid Lwaliwa returned to the heart of defense alongside Livingstone Mulondo as Ibrahim Kiyemba completed the back four.

Kirinya didn’t come to Kitende to sit back, they competed for every ball but Vipers’ were more resilient at the back compared to Kirinya’s attack that was led by Joel Madondo

Madondo troubled Vipers backline, especially in the first half, Wasswa and Kiyemba both dealt with him in turns, the ‘Madondo test’ was passed with flying colors.

The attacking combo of Okello and Daniel Sserunkuma will need sometime before they can eventually adapt to winger Innocent Wafula’s dashing runs down the right and his creative prowess.

Vipers eventually found the breakthrough when Okello beat Kirinya goalie Emmanuel Rubankene with a tap in off Abraham Ndugwa’s cross after a number of failed attempts to beat the lanky shot stopper.

Rahmat Ssenfuka replaced Okello in the 49th minute as Michael Nam Ouma prioritized dominating possession in the middle of the park but also kill the tempo at which Kirinya were running at Vipers.

With 20 minutes left on the lock, Duncan Sseninde came on for Ndugwa, but 1-0 is how it ended as Vipers narrowed the gap between them and KCCA FC to three.

Kiyemba was shown matching orders in added time by referee Brian Nsubuga for time wasting, he became the second Vipers player this season to be sent off after skipper Tadeo Lwanga

The Lugogo side top the log with 37 points from 16 outings, Vipers opponents Kirinya keep in 11th after registering their fifth loss of the season.
