Mbarara City right back Innocent Wafula welcomed his call to the national team ahead of a friendly against South Africa and called it an opportunity to showcase what he is capable of.

The 25-year-old is due for his Uganda Cranes debut against head coach Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana side on June 10th in South Africa.

“It is an opportunity, it is a dream come true to play for my country,” he told media after Wednesday’s training.

“It is every player’s dream to represent their country. I thank the coach (Abdallah Mubiru) for giving me the chance to play for the Uganda Cranes,” he added.

Wafula also expressed confidence to push for a place in the travelling: “About the competition, I welcome it, I believe in my abilities.”

“Competition is helpful, it will help me improve as a player. It is also an opportunity to play with the best players,” retorted Wafula.

Wafula has featured and impressed in all of his ten matches for Mbarara City earning him Mubiru’s trust and admiration.

Wafula has featured for some of East Africa’s great teams including Kenya’s Gor Mahia and Ugandan giants Vipers SC.

It is his impressive displays in Kenya between 2015-2018 that prompted the Harambee stars’ technical team to summon him for national duty, a move which later failed to materialize following doubts over his actual nationality.

He later moved to Vipers in the 2019-2020 season in a bid to revamp his national team chances. He failed to impress at Kitende but a move to Mbarara City has played to his advantage.
