Wakiso Giants coach defends players after Uganda Cup setback

Wakiso Giants FC head coach Ibrahim Kirya has shielded his players despite losing to Kyetume FC in the quarterfinals of the Stanbic Uganda Cup on Sunday in Mukono.

Wakiso Giants lost to their FUFA Big League counterparts 4-1 on spot-kicks after a barren draw in normal and extra time at Nakisunga Ssaza Ground.

“It was a good fight from the boys, we were unfortunate in normal time and extra time and penalties are a lottery,” Kirya said.

“If we were told to bow at the quarterfinals before the start of the competition, we would take it so we have to move on,” he added.

Kyetume scored their kicks through Denis Lubowa, M. Sande, Ibrahim Kazindula and Vincent Kayizzi, while Ivan Kiweewa was the only one to score for Wakiso Giants as Clinton Kamugisha and James Kasibante missed their respective kicks.

Kirya further added that the focus shifts to the Fufa Big League now where they lead the Elgon Group with 32 points, six points clear of second-placed Kyetume FC who they host on March 21st at Kyabazina Stadium in Bugembe.

“The focus now turns to our primary goal which is the promotion to the top tier division. We have six finals to go and we have to move on,” Kirya noted.

The teams that will top the Elgon and Rwenzori groups after regular season will qualify automatically for the top flight.

Those who finish second and third will have to go through a series of the playoffs where the winner will join the group winners.
