Wakiso Giants suffer first defeat of the season at Wankulukuku

Express FC went top of the league for at least 24 hours as they handed Wakiso Giants their first defeat of the season following their 3-0 victory at the Betway Muteesa II Stadium on Friday evening.

Express did not waste time capitalising on coach Douglas Bamweyana’s defensive high-line approach using their pace and long balls in behind to hurt their visitors taking an early lead six minutes into the game.

Eric Kambale beat Kipson Atuheire to Godfrey Lwasibawa’s lofted free kick into the area before setting up George Ssenkaba to score in his third consecutive game and fifth goal in five league games.

The Red Eagles were firmly in the lead with a second, four minutes later, Charles Musiige racing through on goal from the half way line before slotting below the on rushing Samson Kirya.

Wakiso managed to grow from their early nerves and growing more into the game but still struggled to break down Express’ resolute defence.

Express continued to make in roads through Wakiso’s backline despite the latter seeing more of the ball with Ssenkaaba, Kambale and Lwesibwa all coming close.

Pius Kaggwa made a goal line clearance in the 42nd minute, while Simon Namwanja made a last ditch tackle to deny Musiige.

Wakiso surely welcomed the half time break as they were in dire need of re-strategizing for the second half.

However, it is Express that returned stronger, Lwesibawa finally getting on the score sheet with a third for the hosts as his free kick was deflected beyond Kirya.

Express kept on the strong foot and nearly found a fourth, Lwesibawa was played through on goal with only the keeper to beat but he blazed his effort over the cross bar.

It was all Express in the final 25 minutes, Ssenkaaba had his effort cleared off the goal line while second half substitute Faisal Ssekyanzi drew a fine save from Kirya.

Express climbed to the top of the table with the victory going a point above Vipers on 22 points with the latter playing a games less. They are away to Kitara FC next.

Pressure continues to mount on Bamweyana who has now won just a single game out of 10 games this season. They return to action on Tuesday with a home game against MYDA.
