Wasswa Bbosa voted Football256 coach of the season

By Shafic Kiyaga

Wasswa Bbosa capped an imperious season at the Betway Muteesa II Stadium by winning the Best Coach of the Season at the Football256 Best of the Season Award after winning his first-ever league title with Express FC.

The inaugural edition of the awards that recognise the best performers in the season was announced on Friday, and Bbosa received the award following a vote by a panel of Football256 writers.

Bbosa beat a strong field of other coaches, who were in contention for the award including; URA FC’s Sam Ssimbwa and Bright Stars’ Baker Mbowa.

Bbosa’s Express recovered from finishing 10th in the 2019/20 season, eventually winning their first league title since 2012 following a 4-0 victory over Busoga United in what would turn out to be the final game of the season.

Bbosa described Express’ seventh league title as ‘totally deserved’ after winning 17 of their 26 league games and dedicated the award to his staff and players.

“I am delighted to win this award after the kind of season we have had with Express,” Bbosa told Football256, adding; “However, to win an award like this is possible because I have been working around top individuals at the club.”

“My players have been fantastic. They have remained dedicated throughout the season, while my fellow coaches at the club have given their best every single day.”

“I also credit every individual who has helped me through my journey, from the CAF coaching instructors who continue to support me and my bosses at Express,” he said.

“A thumbs up to the organisers of these awards for recognising coaches because for a time our work has not been recognised, hopefully we can have these awards stay and continue to recognise good efforts,” Bbosa continued.

The Red Eagles finished with 58 points, a point above second-placed URA FC and two points ahead of former champions Vipers SC. They also reached the semi-finals of the Uganda Cup.

Although their start to the season was slow, Express kicked on to eventually be declared winners when the season was cut short with four games to go following a surge in COVID-19 cases and a subsequent lockdown.

Bbosa and Express’ triumph has been one of breaking barriers after falling far behind in recent years. The former Express midfielder’s organisation turned the club around into favourites by the start of the second half of the season.

Express produced the best defensive record in the division with the addition of Enock Walusimbi, Murushid Juuko and the rebirth of Mathias Muwanga in goal to form the bedrock for success.

Bbosa was clear that their ambition was to win the title, and as the season grew and rivals stumbled, the Red Eagles were relentless in their pursuit of the title.

Meanwhile, Express FC goalkeeper Mathias Muwanga won the best goalkeeper of the season after a campaign of rejuvenation where he kept 13 clean sheets in 24 games. Captain Enock Walusimbi was recognised with defender of the season award.

Yunus Ssentamu’s 16 goals earned him the striker of the season award.

Elsewhere, Police FC’s Brian Mayanja Muluuli was voted the breakthrough player of the season, with Vipers SC midfielder Bobosi Byaruhanga winning the young player of the year award.

Elsewhere, KCCA FC’s incredible work on social media through their engagements and presence on all social media outlets were recognised as the ‘most vibrant club on social media’, while the club’s media team received recognition for the club media team of the year.

Following a season where the league trophy returned to Wankulukuku, Express FC fans were recognised for spurring their team on even amidst the strict lockdown measures due to COVID-19.
