Police FC duo Tom Ikara and midfielder Yusuf Ssozi plus SC Villa defender Geofrey Wasswa have been invited to join the Uganda Cranes training camp in Kisaasi.

The Cranes entered residential camp on Sunday, May 31 at the Cranes Paradise Hotel in Kisaasi in preparation of their international friendly against South Africa on June 10 in Johannesburg.

Up to 14 players of the 34 players who were called up for the friendly were present when Abdallah Mubiru’s side took part in their first training session on Monday morning at the MTN Omondi Stadium in Lugogo.

With disruptions to the training schedule due to Uganda Cup engagements for some of the players and also restrictions to international movement due to the prevailing COVID-19 situation, Mubiru has decided to call up the trio for the training camp.

Ssozi will be joining the Cranes for the first time since earning his first national call up as part of the Cranes team for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier against Burundi.

He was handed his senior debut in the return leg against Burundi at Lugogo, playing a starring role as the Cranes won 3-0 to seal qualification for CHAN.

But a knee injury he suffered at the tail end of last season and his fitness struggles at the start of the season ruled him out subsequent call ups including missing out on a place in the CHAN squad.

Tom Ikara makes a return to the Cranes fold since making the Cranes squad that played at the CHAN tournament in Cameroon.

On the other hand, Wasswa’s impressive form since making a move to SC Villa in March has seen him called up for national duty since making a provisional squad for CHAN in March 2020.

The tournament’s eventual suspension due to the coronavirus pandemic outbreak and also lack of playing time at club level following his departure from Vipers ruled him out of the squad that eventually played at CHAN in January 2021.

The Cranes will continue training with a single session on Tuesday, with some of the foreign based players including captain Emmanuel Okwi expected to take part.
