South African Premier Soccer League side Chippa United has confirmed the signing of Ugandan goalkeeper Ismail Watenga on a free transfer.
Watenga has been in South Africa for the last three months training with Mamelodi Sundowns where he was understood to have signed a three-year contract.
But it is Chippa who have won the race for the goalkeeper who has agreed a 19-month contract with the Port Elizabeth club.
“Uganda national goalkeeper, Ismail Watenga, has officially signed for Chippa United and is available with immediate effect,” a statement from the club said.
“The 25-year-old joins from Sofapaka F.C (Kenya) having signed a 19-month-contract with the club and is already training with the team in Port Elizabeth,” the statement added.
Watenga joins as a replacement for Veil Mothwa who left the Chilli Boys for another DSTV Premiership side Amazulu.
Watenga has been without a club since terminating his contract with Kenyan side Sofapaka FC in January.
