After increasing the hopes of winning silverware this season by advancing to the quarterfinals of the Stanbic Uganda Cup, Express FC head coach George Ssemwogerere revealed that sticking on their style is what helped them to knock Police FC out of the tournament.
Express FC defeated Police 4-1 on penalties after a barren affair in 90 minutes at the Betway Muteesa II Stadium Wankulukuku on Monday evening.
And for the third straight game, Ssemwogerere named a team with six defenders in Charles Musoke, Arthur Kiggundu, Shafiq Kakeeto, John Revita, Isaac Mutanga and Disan Galiwango, the latter two deployed in defensive midfield and left wing respectively.
Michael Birungi and Frank ‘Zaga’ Tunwesigye led the line for Express while natural strikers Brian Umony and Tony Odur waited on the bench.
“The boys played according to the system I told them to play to, I simply told them to play our game and they did exactly that,” Ssemwogerere told www.football-256.com.
“It’s the opponents who must change to our game plan, not us to change to the game plan of the opponent.”
“We had a very good first half and we didn’t get any problems, the visitors had only one shot on goal and that’s the mistake we made in the second half,” he added.
Ssemwogerere also praised the teamwork mentality with which his team played with, something Express has lacked in the past.
“They played well as they were supposed to and helped each other where it was necessary, just a few things we have to rectify with this new system so it’s hard for them but they will have to adopt,” he added.
Ssemwogerere however encouraged his players to focus on perfecting their weaknesses if they are to be a formidable side and not get excited at this level of the tournament.
“In football we plan for the next game, not the one that was played yesterday so we have to plan for the next level then if we qualify we plan for another level.”
“We can’t plan for the final to win the trophy, we plan for every stage we reach. We can’t jump a river before we reach it. We reach the river and see what next,” he noted.
Express will be back in action against Maroons in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League at home in their first home game under the former club captain. .
