After just 37 days, Young Africans have sacked head coach Zlatko Krmpotić. The club announced Krmpotic’s immediate departure on Saturday in the wake of a 3-0 victory over Coastal Union.

A surprise statement from Young Africans on Saturday night confirmed that the Jangwani club had relieved Krmpotic of his coaching duties.

“Young Africans Sports Club hereby informs its fans, members and stakeholders that it has reached mutual agreement to terminate its relationship with its head coach Zlatko Krmpotic,”

“ Young Africans Sports Club would like to thank Mr. Zlatko for his professionalism while at the club and wish him all the best in his future endeavours.” read the club statement.

Krmpotic leaves with Young Africans sat first in the Tanzania Premier League table having collected 13 points from five matches, three more points than they had at this corresponding stage last season.

Many agree the former Zesco United coach was never a good fit for the club, but sacking him so close to the Dar es Salaam derby and especially after topping the league standing is a strange move.

However, going by recent media reports the announcement came as no major shock.

Here, we look at the problems that contributed to the Serbian quick exit from Jangwani.

Fallout with Farid Mussa

The breakdown of Krmpotic’s relationship with Farid Mussa will be top of the agenda. The former Azam winger is considered as one of the biggest signing made by Young Africans in the last transfer window.

After four years in Spain, Farid completed his reportedly $50,000 return to the Tanzanian Premier League in August. Given the amount Yanga paid, he is viewed as an integral part of the first team.

Five games into the season, he has only played one match under Krmpotic. It did not take long for tensions to surface. Once they had, they would not go away.

While Young Africans spokesman, Antonio Nugaz termed his exclusion from the squad as due to illness, Farid came out and declared himself fully fit and went on to say he does not understand why he is not playing.

It was telling that he did not even make it off the bench in the last two games against Mtibwa Sugar and Coastal Union.

It is safe to say the bad blood between Krmpotic and Farid contributed to the quick exit of the former. The serbian tactician could not not only get the best out of a marquee signing but also went as far as pushing him out of the squad so early into his reign.

Blunt attack

The ever restless Yanga fans were more concerned with how the team looked blunt in attack. Until Saturday’s comprehensive victory, the team had not scored more than one goal in a competitive match.

Yanga spent big in transfer fees to bring three strikers, Waziri Junior, Michael Sarpong and Yacouba Songne. The three strikers have a squad just two goals among them in five matches.

Waziri Junior arrived at Jangwani off the back of a very good season with relegated Mbao but never got a single minute in a competitive game under Krmpotic. He was not even selected in the matchday squad against Coastal Union.

Uneasy relationship with players

As one of the biggest signings, Farid was the most high-profile player to fall out with Krmpotic, but there were many more cases.

Krmpotic is said to have upset captain Deus Kaseke and young fullback Shomari Kibwana after questioning the latter’s performance.

Ahead of a clash against Mtibwa Sugar, it is reported Krmpotic wanted to employ Kaseke as a fullback instead of Kibwana.

It was a decision that irked senior members in the squad who questioned the unorthodox decision. The coach made a U-turn but the damage had been done.

It is almost unbelievable but Krmpotic had lost the dressing room within weeks of arriving and training with the team.
