A team of 22 Ugandan footballers was on Thursday summoned by Turkish coach Omar Selli for trials in Spain scheduled for the latter part of August.

The players under the Team Fundi umbrella, who will later be shortened to 20 will undergo trials against Spanish Segunda B sides, Hercules CF, Atletico Benidorm CF, Intercity CF and CF Olihuera.

In the training camp, they will aim to showcase their might in front of international scouts and player intermediaries from across Europe.

With the showcase getting advertisements from over 200 countries, it looks like a huge opportunity for the players who are only beginning to stamp their names in the game.

One of the players among the contingent, URA SC’s Derrick Ndahiro expressed his gratitude for the chance and promised to give his best.

“My target as a player is to give the best performance and perhaps be selected for further considerations,” Ndahiro said.

Team Fundi under President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s funded project “Youth for International football” partners with Glasman Group Football International (GGFI) which operates in 12 countries.

The project’s objective of ensuring international football for youngsters is clear, and it is one that the players are ready to instantly gain from with the trip to Spain.

Besides the potential deals, youngsters will attain professional training, with the best facilities in the world and the experience should make them better players.

They will also have a feel and experience of football in Europe and perhaps prepare them for possible future involvements.

It is unrealistic to assume all players will get deals from the 12-day trip, but the exposure to one of the world’s footballing heavyweights can not be taken lightly.

The team which is expected to jet out of the country on August 15, conducts training at the Africa Bible University in Lubowa under Selli, goalkeeper’s coach Ben Kalama and FUFA official Bashir Mutyaba.
